GATHUL

"This print is about what it feels like when I am hunting in the mangroves with the women of my family. We are often sitting in the dark mud (dhoḻu) digging way down for wamurra (Corrugated Mangrove Clam), dh’an’pala (Mud Mussel) or nyoka (Mud crab). So many other things that we know how to find and eat which are delicious, ṉirriwan (Milky Oyster), ṉamura (Giant Black-lipped Oyster), ŋukaliya (Hermit crab) and others. We sit together telling stories and laughing inside the peaceful mangroves as the children play around us. This is a woodblock made from a slab of Ganiri (Beauty leaf) tree which had fallen down at Shady Beach. The black sections which illustrate the aerial roots of the mangrove trees (gathul) are made with a linocut."
