Marlboro Cowboy
Filtered through his contemporary pop sensibilities, Mickey Mason’s textural paintings are soaked in familiar references to the camp theatricality of 1960’s film and television—here a doe-eyed ode to the brooding cowboy of the Spaghetti Western. Each set in idealised landscapes that feel like collages of an any-place-paradise, Mickey’s brightly coloured acrylics are at once an escapist melange of popular imagery, and a witty criticism of the contemporary tendency to artificially depict one’s ‘best life’.
Each of Mason’s cowboys presents its own out-of-the-box character.
