Untitled from the series, ‘It takes longer than you think’

framed in Tasmanian ash with non-reflective art glass

'It takes longer than you think' is a material investigation of time, an exploration of the expansive temporal frames of the geologic and cosmic and their complex entanglement with human experience. The project is a contemplation of the shape time might take, should it surrender itself to form. An attempt to give form to the formless in ways that speak to measures of time affecting both human and more-than-human bodies.

The project commenced with the manufacture of a series of ceramic objects encapsulating these temporal entanglements – ceramic orbs patterned by hand to mimic the patina found inside meteorites. A patina formed by their imperceivably slow cooling over a period of millennia. Over an extended period, these objects were subjected to varying creative, destructive and regenerative processes, exposing them to events that occur across different timescales – days, hours, minutes, and seconds (and so on). Like us, these objects were born to die – obliterated, in this instance, by gunfire. The resulting explosions were suspended in time by light and sound; documented in photographic stills, video, and sound recordings, which combine to invoke time in multiple frames – human time, geological time, cosmic time, Deep Time.

Drawing on Einstein’s special theory of relativity, black holes, meteorites and event horizons, 'It takes longer than you think' explores manifestations of time from the personal to the ecological.
