The \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan\u003emamu \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan\u003eNaomi depicts are evil night dwelling spirits, which are on the hunt for the \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan\u003ekurunpa \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan\u003e(spirits) of those who have let their sleeping bodies. Mamu usually target the vulnerable, interfering with the sprits of children and those who are unwell or suffering. \u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan\u003eAs a revered \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan\u003engankeri\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan\u003e, a traditional healer, Naomi works with the spirit world to counter mamu in order to treat the sick and protect community, providing \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan\u003ewirunymankupai \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan\u003e(healing treatments) through what is called \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan\u003emara a\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan\u003el\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan\u003ea\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan\u003e, meaning open hands. Ngangkari (traditional healers) are trained to safely release the \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan\u003emamu \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan\u003efrom the sick, and to help reunite people with their \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan\u003ekurunpa \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan\u003e(spirit) stolen by the \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan\u003emamu\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan\u003e. \u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan\u003eNaomi’s practice as Ngankeri and her presence in the spirit world informs her artistic practice. Since its foundation in 1999 (originally as Minymaku Arts) Tjala Arts has concentrated on adapting traditional aboriginal symbols and designs to create contemporary abstract imagery. The centre provides an opportunity for the Anangu (Pitjantjatjara Aboriginal people) to develop skills in fine art and regional craft production.
