Wood-fired kilns create an environment where flame, ash from the burning wood, and smoke interact with and shape the work inside the kiln. \u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan style=\"color: #000000; font-family: Helvetica Neue; font-size: small;\"\u003eThis piece was fired alongside the work of nine other potters over approximately 20 hours, with the labour of firing shared between the artists. Shells were used as wadding beneath the work to lift it from the kiln shelf and other pots, preventing molten ash from fusing the work during firing. As the shells were exposed to the intense heat, the calcium within them reacted with the kiln atmosphere and transferred into the surface of the glaze, leaving distinctive shell markings and subtle textural variations unique to each piece. \u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan style=\"color: #000000; font-family: Helvetica Neue; font-size: small;\"\u003eThe final outcome was dependent on what was placed next to it in the kiln, who was stoking the fire at the time, and the salt that was introduced at high temperature, instantly vaporising and changing the kiln atmosphere. Every piece is therefore unique and cannot be replicated.
