LARAPUNA
ANNE-RITA VLEUGEL
7–24 MAY
Larapuna is a series of abstract oil paintings developed through time spent at Larapuna (Bay of Fires), Tasmania. Working within a restrained palette of umber, ochre, sienna, clay, charcoal, and muted olive, Vleugel draws on the colours of sand, soil, stone, and weathered terrain. The paintings respond to the landscape not as direct representations, but as quiet records of endurance and fragility embedded within place.
Each work begins with simple ink drawings made on site, capturing shifting relationships of shape, shadow, and line. In the studio, and at times en plein air, these initial observations evolve into layered surfaces of oil paint, occasionally combined with cold wax or sand. Gestural marks move across the surface, intersecting with quieter fields of colour.
Suggesting terrains that are both geological and emotional, the paintings reflect on the subtle tension between resilience and vulnerability. Contained compositional structures evoke stability, while layered surfaces reveal traces of what lies beneath. Through this interplay of concealment and revelation, the works maintain a delicate balance between strength and fragility.
