Katie Daniels’ paintings are personal responses to the landscape and the experience of time, environment, the specificity of place, the nature of light, and the sights, sounds, and feelings these evoke. The works are created as lasting mementos of these fleeting experiences. They capture a passage of time and a way of being in nature that the artist understands as moving through thresholds—an “always becoming” of the self.
The period between the initial moment of inspiration and the act of making in the studio is also integral to the paintings’ material structure. This interval informs Daniels’ choices in the framing of each subject and the development of her colour palette.
Threshold continues directly from Daniels’ previous body of work, A Way Through, building on its themes and inspirations. At its core is the transformative journey of existing within the liminal—the messy middle. The way forward is often unclear, yet the journey itself can be beautiful. There are no definitive answers; instead, the next step reveals itself only as each threshold is crossed.
The paintings in this series explore recurring motifs of disappearing stairs and paths, points of focus held in stasis, bridges, water and air, and the moon as a compass in the darkness.

Katie Daniels is a New South Wales born artist now based in Naarm/Melbourne, Victoria.
Katie Daniels holds a Bachelor of Creative Arts with First Class Honours from the University of Wollongong. She began exhibiting her landscape paintings in 2018, and in 2019 her work was featured by The Design Files as part of its TDF Collects series. Since then, Daniels has presented numerous solo and group exhibitions, including at Sydney Contemporary.
Daniels has been a finalist in several prestigious art prizes, including the Wynne Prize (2018), the Calleen Art Award (2021, 2022), the National Emerging Art Prize (2021, 2024), and the Georges River Art Prize (2025). Her 2025 Wynne Prize entry was selected for the curated Salon des Refusés exhibition and her 2021 Calleen Art Award finalist work was acquired by Cowra Regional Art Gallery for its permanent collection.
