L’impostore Italiano (The Italian Imposter)
Nunzio Miano
31 July–17 August

Nunzio Miano is an Italian-Australian artist renowned for his visceral and visually striking paintings portraying the emotional and psychological dimensions of his subjects. For his forthcoming exhibition, The Italian Imposter, Miano bravely turns his attention onto himself, sharing a sublime series of sensitive self-portraits that reflect an alienated artist caught between cultures and in search of identity. A feeling of fragmentation familiar to anyone who has experienced the estrangement of migration.

“‘The Italian Imposter’ serves as a deeply personal exploration of my journey. As I navigate the delicate boundary between my Italian heritage and my life in Australia, I often find myself questioning my sense of belonging.

In this exhibition, these feelings of dislocation are encapsulated through floating figures, distorted faces, and representations of ambiguity and loss. Inviting viewers into a shared space of vulnerability, each pieces reflects my internal struggles, illustrating the fractures within my identity.

By confronting loss, longing, and resilience, ‘The Italian Imposter’ is a celebration of cultural memory. A reminder that even amidst the adversity of alienation, a greater quest for connection and understanding continues to thrive.”
