of the inland
artists of maningrida
11–26 july

In Burarra language, there is a word: jorrnyjurra.

High ground. Shore. A place such as a creek bank or country unaffected by the seasonal floods. An inland place.

This entwining of cultural and material knowledge is deep-rooted for artists of north-central Arnhem Land, where pandanus fibres, natural dyes, ochre pigments and stringybark are sourced from these inland places. Gathered according to generations of ecological and cultural knowledge, these materials reflect enduring custodial relationships with Country, where connection is nurtured, cultivated and kept strong through artistic practice.

In Of the Inland, artists from the Burarra, Kune, Kuninjku and Gurr-goni language groups of the Maningrida region share ancestral narratives that remain inseparable from the landscapes from which they emerge. Spirit beings, creation stories and cultural knowledge are woven, painted and sculpted, made tangible through the very substances of Country itself, binding story, land and maker together in an enduring continuum.

Of the Inland features the work of

Anniebell Marrngamarrnga, Lena Yarinkuka, Lucy Yarawanga, Jeremiah Bonson, Serena Bonson, Simon Namunjdja, Simone Namunjdja, Thomas Baru and Yolanda Rostron.

Of the Inland is proudly presented by BSG Projects in association with Maningrida Arts & Culture.

Join us for the opening event celebration on Saturday 11 July, 6–8PM.
