Painting Facade
Philip James Mylecharane
21 AUG–7 SEPT

Philip James Mylecharane presents a range of paintings that use ambiguity and contingency as a point of departure. These works propose painting to be in and of itself; a position that avoids mythologising social narrative, relational ideals, and utopian ideas about the ontology of art itself. It draws directly on our own psyche as the driving force of how we perceive, interact with, and derive meaning from art itself.

By using a fragmented picture plane, allusion to spatial depth, and the incorporation of both abstracted, gestural marks alongside definitive forms and shapes, Philip James Mylecharane invites a form of visual language where there is a withholding of closure and finality. This can then invite speculation towards the transient nature of the spaces that we inhabit, as well as the personae that we create. The change, contrast, and accident present in these works embody the feelings and indetermination we may find in ourselves and each other. Rather than emulate, painting can invent a way to understand and comprehend reality.
