Where We Return
It’s quite easy to take birds for granted. A part of everyday life, their dawn chorus welcomes us into the day. They remain ever-present, often unnoticed and unbothered by our presence in their world (until you drop a chip, that is).
As diverse in depiction as there are species in the Aves family, Flock celebrates their presence in art and in our lives, inviting a host of artists to take a playful approach to creating a veritable aviary of feathered friends Flock reminds us that, whether a pandemonium of parrots or a parliament of owls, every flock is composed of diverse individuals.
Courtney Mikaela is a contemporary visual artist based in the Adelaide Hills. Living within a wildlife sanctuary, Courtney’s practice is shaped by a life lived close to nature and a deep sense of belonging to the landscape she calls home. She paints birds as a way of paying attention - noticing who is here, what is changing, and the quiet rhythms of the natural world. Working primarily in acrylics, oils and pastels, Courtney builds thin layers of colour to capture movement, light and atmosphere.
