An introspective examination of Melbourne’s built environment and its role within the city’s urban fabric: past, present, and speculative future. Once defined by architectural ambition and material honesty, design excellence is gradually eroding under the economic pressures of today.

Large-scale Modernist architecture in Australia has taken many forms, each deeply shaped by the prevailing conditions of its time. Once stripped back to raw, minimal, and authentic components, this approach has become increasingly unattainable. Once radical and necessary, these buildings now linger as spectral remnants of another era, involuntarily superseded by contemporary forces.

This work interrogates the knowledge lost at the peak of Australian Modernist architecture, questioning whether technological innovation has enabled genuine evolution or accelerated the degradation of architecture as both a discipline and a physical expression into a neutral, non-responsive form.
