Marnie Ross is a contemporary painter based in Sydney. She has been a finalist in numerous art prizes including the Paddington Art Prize, Ravenswood Women’s Art Prize and was recently awarded Highly Commended in the Waverley 9 X 5 Landscape prize. Marnie’s abstract works are a response to organic forms, in particular the evolving shadow patterns seen in the natural environment. Nature’s ever-changing designs created by light, movement and time inspire multi-layered compositions of vividly coloured shapes. Her work represents these moments captured as nature is continually reorganised.

Explorations of colour and texture are an integral part of Marnie’s work. The contrast between soft dusky tones and saturated bold colours are further enhanced by the variation in paint application with thin frosty glazes revealing the textured surface below.

In Marnie’s new body of work featured in ‘Summertide’ the abstract landscapes have been reduced to minimal compositions, directing the focus to colour relationships and tones. These works aim to depict rhythmic lapping tides, warm afternoon summer sunsets and quiet coastal views; experienced with the full spectrum of light patterns throughout a day.
