First Light
Woven from silk, paper and cotton with a fused glass element, First Light reflects on moments of emergence and renewal. Layers of woven fibre and light-responsive glass create a shifting surface that changes throughout the day, inviting contemplation of the quiet transitions that shape both landscape and memory.
Working across handwoven tapestry, paper, silk, reclaimed fibres, cyanotype and fused glass, Maryanne creates richly tactile works that move between softness and structure. Her recent framed works bring the intimacy and material depth of tapestry into a smaller format, where woven surfaces and glass elements respond to changing light.
Maryanne began weaving in 2011 and has since taught thousands of makers around the world. She is the author of On the Loom and Modern Weaver, both published by Abrams Books.
Her work has been exhibited internationally and is held in private and commercial collections, including the US Embassy in Chad, Soho House Barcelona, the InterContinental Dubai, Ayrburn Estate in New Zealand and the Tasmanian Walking Company. She was recently named a finalist in the 2026 Bay of Fires Art Prize and the Kate Derum and Irene davis Tapestry Award in 2024.
