Attrition
Structure collides with surrender in Still Drifting by Myles Burgess.
The exhibition explores the dialogic relationship between control and chaos. Each canvas carries layers of restraint and release, the colours erupting and dissolving in turn.
The dualities don’t cancel each other out but define one another. After all, how might we understand chaos without its opposite, control? Nature without artifice? Apollo without Dionysius?
The work is not merely interested in swinging from one extreme to the other, but in locating meaning in the interstices. As order and unpredictability drift together and apart, the artist evokes their beautiful and essential association.
In this way, the paintings in Still Drifting reveal how integration can be achieved once the opposing points have been acknowledged.
