Emerging artist and maker Serene Paul explores colour, texture, and abstraction through her creative practice. Working primarily with watercolour and punch-needle, she also incorporates a range of media to develop and expand her ideas. Inspired by nature, abstract art, and mid-century design, her work reflects a lifelong passion for making, informed by a background in fashion design. Since discovering punch-needle and beginning to create art pieces in 2020, she has been captivated by the possibilities of the medium.

Each piece begins with the hand-dyeing of yarn sourced from an Australian woollen mill, using natural botanical dyes. Through a process of layering dye baths, dip-dyeing, and speckling, Serene creates a rich spectrum of nuanced tones and textures. Working with plant-derived dyes allows her to maintain a strong connection to the natural world, an important thread running throughout her practice.
