Junba On Country 16-0738

" I am a freshwater women my country is inland and this picture is about us going back on country teaching our culture to the next generation. We have to teach our children our culture on country so they can feel the spirit of our ancestors and make the country happy. The screenprint uses photos from the Mowanjum Community Collection taken during a junba practice at Mount Hart.

The patterns inside the boy have been developed from a drawing of a freshwater longneck Turtle is a significant totem animal; inside the body can be found a Wandjina shaped bone. Young boys are not allowed to play with freshwater turtles until they have grown facial hair."
