Early days
Joshua de Gruchy
13 FEBRUARY–2 March
There is magic in a bush track, a curiousness to its path and one’s reason for following it.
Time spent in the old port towns of Wilcannia and Menindee, along the Darling (Baaka) River, led de Gruchy to question his process, prompting him to explore the role of travel and storytelling in his work.
Early Days reflects his appreciation for these places and the ways in which his approach topainting has evolved. He considers what it means to live as an artist and views this period with optimism - the ‘early days’ of what is yet to come.
Joshua de Gruchy (b.1999) is an artist living in Broken Hill on Wilyakali Country, New South Wales.
His work draws inspiration from the Australian landscape and stems from studies made during painting trips out bush, where he camps, lives simply and translates thoughts to paper and wood.
It is the colour and form of the land, paired with the memory of those places that shape his studio work, allowing him to investigate the space between figuration and abstraction as a way of storytelling.
Having chosen an alternative approach to fine arts education through travel and self-directed research, de Gruchy has exhibited in solo and group exhibitions across the country, and is held in private collections locally and internationally.
Please join us for a drink to celebrate the opening of Early Days on Friday 14 February (6–8PM)
