The adventures of Ovum and Spermatozoa as they travel through time and space
Mark Stapelfeldt
7–24 March 2024
The works in this series, The adventures of Ovum and Spermatozoa as they travel through time and space, are mixed media pieces then photographed on medium format film.
This concept arose with the gift of a box of rare bird eggs, the most beautiful collection of all sizes, shapes and colours. The eggs were used as inspiration in creating mixed media backgrounds and sets to show the magnificence of creation and the beauty and chance behind the miracle of life. Themes which the artist's practice is based on.
Soft focus, vibrant colours and void like spaces create a dream like atmosphere of contemplation and peace, allowing us to consider the majesty of our existence and what was before and will be after.
Mark Stapelfeldt is a photographer working in staged (mixed media) and candid shot in natural environments. His focus is on the beauty and chance behind the miracle of creation and the then battle of life in resisting death and related events and circumstances.
The capability of humans for both good and evil acts and deeds are also themes which influence his work. Mark Stapelfeldt works in medium format and 35mm film. Black and white prints are hand made silver gelatin prints.
