Uniform [adolescence]
Uniform explores the intersection of neuro-normative standards, gendered expectations, forced conformity, and personal agency within mainstream schooling systems. Receiving an ADHD-C diagnosis in adulthood prompted reflection on my primary and secondary education, revealing the competing pressures I faced to conform both as an individual with ADHD and as a girl. Rather than explicitly criticising schooling institutions, the work visually articulates the internal tension of this experience, reflecting the necessity of silence as a survival strategy. The school uniform’s materiality acts as a tactile memory, while painted portraiture and imagery of uniforms, classrooms, and school grounds emphasise my embodied ADHD experience within these environments.
