The collection ‘Curiosity Communing With Indignity’ are visual meditations on the emotion of shame, created in the hopes of developing self-compassion. Rooted in Jungian psychology, the artist practiced six months of daily journaling to meet their ‘shadow self’; messy traits that are constantly swimming below the surface of the subconscious. By doing so, they sought to converse with these ‘shameful’ traits to become more emotionally integrated and honest. On the surface, these works may appear free and playful; this is the tension the artist used to communicate with the more uncomfortable parts of herself: erraticism, jealousy, concealment and desire. These autobiographical pieces aim to show hidden divulgences within the layers of paint and mark-making through gestural painting and the artist’s own hand. The viewer is invited to consider what moments of truth lie beneath, if met with curiosity instead of resistance.
