"Long time ago in the olden days my ancestors travelled by sailing in a canoe and by walking. They travelled for ceremony, circumcision ceremony, funerals and family visits. They lived off the land by hunting, fishing and collecting bush tucker. If there was a certain death or ceremony happening they would send a messenger with a message stick to deliver messages to different tribes. We no longer use message sticks because we send our messages by calling on the phone or by letter writing or faxing. When my ancestors sailed by canoe they used the tides and the wind to get to their destination. The conditions depended on the weather. Sailing or walking, they used their traditioonal knowledge of the weather – to know when and where the wind would blow or when the rain would come. Through their traditional knowledge of the land my ancestors knew the right time and the right season to go hunting, fishing and to get bush tucker. They would camp for a couple of nights at their outstation and then move from one place to another depending on the different seasons (the hot season, dry/cold season and rainy season). Nowadays, we travel by Toyota to funerals, ceremonies, hunting, fishing and to get bush tucker. Although things have changed the traditional knowledge of the land is still being passed on to us by our ancestors."
